A Brief Analysis of Nylon Sheet Classification and Applications
Nylon sheet refers to plates made of polyamide (PA), a material invented by Wallace Carothers, a chemist at DuPont in the United States, along with his research team. The main types include PA6 and PA66, which offer high mechanical strength, rigidity, excellent wear resistance, electrical insulation, and other superior properties. They are widely used in manufacturing mechanical structural components, wear-resistant parts, and transmission components. Nylon materials can absorb up to 7% moisture (by weight) in high-humidity environments, which may affect their dimensions and performance.
Nylon sheets can be classified into extruded nylon sheets and cast nylon sheets according to their manufacturing processes. Both cast and extruded nylon sheets are available in both unmodified and modified forms. Nylon sheet is one of the most important engineering plastics, with a wide range of applications.
Extruded Nylon Sheet Classification and Applications
PA6 Nylon Sheet (White): This material boasts the most superior comprehensive properties, including mechanical strength, stiffness, toughness, mechanical shock resistance, and wear resistance. Coupled with excellent electrical insulation capability and chemical resistance, nylon 6 becomes a "general-purpose" material, suitable for the manufacturing of mechanical structural parts and maintainable components, such as sliders, gears, bearings, etc.
PA66 nylon sheet (cream color): Compared with nylon 6, it has better mechanical strength, stiffness, heat resistance, wear resistance, and anti-settling performance, but its impact strength and mechanical vibration reduction performance decrease. It is very suitable for automatic lathe mechanical processing. It is widely used in gears, shaft sleeves, bearings, guides, sliders, worm gears, pump impellers, conveyor trough liners, chute liners, sorting equipment liners, engineering vehicle and ship liners, and other products.
PA46 Nylon Sheet (Red Brown Color): Compared with ordinary nylon, the characteristic of Nylon 4.6 is that it has strong rigidity and retention strength, good creep resistance, and is more resistant to heat aging within a wider temperature range. It is widely applied in numerous fields such as the automotive industry, electronic and electrical appliances, industrial machinery, aerospace, medical devices, and sports goods.
Glass filled nylon sheet (black): It can be further divided into PA6 nylon glass filled sheet and PA66 nylon glass filled sheet. Compared with pure nylon 6 or nylon 66, this type of nylon is reinforced with 10-30% glass fibers, which improves its heat resistance, strength, stiffness, creep resistance, dimensional stability, wear resistance, etc. Its maximum allowable operating temperature is also higher. It is widely used in fields such as chemical machinery, anti-corrosion equipment, automobile manufacturing, metallurgical equipment linings, and engineering transport vehicle and ship linings.
Molybdenum disulfide filled nylon sheet (gray-black): This nylon is filled with molybdenum disulfide. Compared with ordinary nylon, its rigidity, hardness and dimensional stability have been improved, but the impact resistance has decreased. The grain formation effect of molybdenum disulfide enhances the crystalline structure, thereby improving the material's load-bearing and wear resistance. The most widespread application directions include processing into gears, bearings, shaft sleeves, star wheels, sliders, guides, bushings, belt pulleys, etc., which are all wear-resistant transmission components.
Cast Nylon Sheet Classification and Applications
MC Nylon Sheet (Ivory White): The properties of unmodified cast nylon 6 are very similar to those of nylon 66. It has excellent comprehensive performance, high strength, stiffness, hardness, resistance to creep, wear resistance, heat aging resistance, and good machinability. It is widely used in the manufacturing of gears and parts for chemical machinery and anti-corrosion equipment.
MC901 Nylon Sheet (Blue): This modified nylon 6 has a distinct blue color. It has higher toughness, better flexibility, and better fatigue resistance compared to ordinary cast nylon. It is proven to be an ideal material for gears, sprockets, and transmission gears. It is widely used in the fields of machinery, electronics, and chemical engineering.
Oil Filled Nylon Sheet (green): This cast nylon 6 is a truly self-lubricating nylon. It was specifically developed to manufacture parts that cannot be lubricated, have high loads, and operate at low speeds. This has greatly expanded the application scope of nylon. It has a lower friction coefficient than ordinary nylon (reducing by 50%) while improving its wear resistance (increasing by 10 times). It is mainly used in transmission components in fields such as mining and metallurgy, mechanical manufacturing, chemical corrosion prevention, automotive industry, electronics and electrical engineering, and food industry.
Molybdenum Disulfide Filled Nylon Sheet (gray-black): Contains molybdenum disulfide powder. It can enhance the load-bearing capacity and wear resistance of the unmodified cast nylon without affecting its impact resistance and fatigue resistance. It is widely used in the manufacturing of gears, bearings, star wheels and sleeves.
Solid Lubricant Nylon Sheet (gray): Made with a patented moldable nylon 6 formula, containing solid lubricant. This material is self-lubricating, has excellent friction properties, outstanding wear resistance and pressure-speed capability (5 times higher than ordinary moldable nylon). It is particularly suitable for high-speed running, non-lubricated moving parts, and is an ideal complement to oil-filled nylon. Widely used in high-speed moving components, chemical anti-corrosion equipment, mining and metallurgical equipment, automotive and transmission components, etc.
